You are probably familiar with the phenomenon whereby fashion trends recur or reinvent themselves. This is clearly the case for next spring, where we will see a comeback of the 60s. This decade was mainly characterised by three styles: the slightly more traditional Ivy Leage look, the Mods who dressed after the English group The Beatles and finally the widely known American peace-loving Hippie style. Wondering which trends made their way back to the catwalk? Our frontrow fashion reporter from Paris Fee Valaert would like to give you an overview of the striking trends for men’s fashion this spring!
1/Sweatshirts

A first trend that can be seen this spring in brands such as:Berluti , whose creative director is the Belgian Kris van Assche, Lou Dalton and Emporio Armani is the sweatshirt. The word says it all, a form of T-shirt with the thickness of a jumper, made from cotton or jersey. During the 60s, this garment was mainly made up of bright colours, whereas this season it is leaning more towards pastel and colder colours. The use of stripes and various patterns has been reintroduced, however. The sweatshirt, also called knit shirt, can have a zip, buttons and/or a collar. It is then often tucked into trousers, making this a truly classic, and some would say, an old fashioned look.

2/Oversized Bottoms

With oversized bottoms we do not mean the famous elephant legs, no, we refer to the trousers with long, baggy but often nonchalant legs. Besides the long oversized trousers, the trend of the XXL-bermudos is also back. They can both be part of a slightly more formal outfit or combined with a more casual top piece in different colours. Next season we will see these trousers accompanied by a pair of loafers, trainers or sandals with socks. We have seen them on Alexander McQueen, Fendi, Gucci, Dries Van Noten, etc.

3/Withdrawn socks

#sorrynotsorry Jani Kazaltzis… but the high up (white) socks are totally in again! Coupled with the two trends above, they form a picture that was featured extensively at the SS21 fashion shows. The most striking image is without a doubt the sandals with socks. Okay, we have to be honest, not everyone is a big fan of them, but they are super functional! As temperatures are already rising a bit during spring, sandals are ideal, but during the evening they drop quickly. This is where socks come in. Apart from sandals, pulled-up socks can also be found with a pair of classic suit shoes or a pair of loafers, also known as loafers. More examples can always be found at Comme Des Garçons, Lou Dalton and Dior.

4/The Colour of Love

Red is not only the colour of love and passion, but also of strength and courage. For the latter reason, this colour is part of our beautiful Belgian flag. During this rather lonely period, this strength and courage was more important than ever. The brands such as Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and MSGM seemed to have understood this message and wanted to carry it out themselves.

5/The Bomber Jacket

Not the 60s parka, but the 70s bomber jacket, which made its way back onto the catwalk in 2015, will be back in fashion for spring 2021. If you prefer a more casual look with the necessary functionality, this item is ideal! You can combine a lot with this jacket, and this season you can discover them in different colours. For example, Boss suggested monochrome outfits, including the eye-catching reflective bomber jackets in turquoise, emerald green and neon pink. French brand Hermès released them in a matt, leather version.

It seems to be a season where functionality and comfort play a major role. The link with the 1960s Mod’s can be clarified by looking at the origin of the word. Mod’s comes from modernist, referring to anything that was seen as popular, fashionable and contemporary. On the other hand, Peter Meaden, the manager of the then very popular group: The Who, defined the Mod style as clean living under difficult circumstances. And it is precisely this citation that is now very topical again, as the world has been plagued by a global pandemic for almost a year now. Fashion is one of many things that must adapt to these difficult circumstances.
